Even the Rich and Famous Get Served

footballIf you follow football or enjoy watching Sunday NFL games, then you have doubt heard Johnny Manziel’s name come up from time to time. Drafted as triple threat right out of high school, Manziel joined the Cleveland Browns under extremely high expectations of becoming a lasting franchise quarterback, but that’s not exactly what happened. After two rocky seasons with the Browns, the team cut him earlier this year, as did his agent and marketing team.

Manziel’s friends and teammates describe him as a conflicted soul, partly wanting to focus on football, color in the lines, and stay out of trouble, partly wanting to give in to his desire to party with the wildest crowds and spend all of his money. Despite his attempts at rehab, Manziel now seems unconcerned that he’s considered “untouchable” in the game of football until he becomes sober and truly reliable. He is plagued by lawsuits, including an accusation of assault against his ex-girlfriend, who says Manziel struck her so hard that her eardrum ruptured.

Manziel was most recently served outside of a nightclub, rather than at his home, for a lawsuit filed by the real estate broker of a $4.5 million mansion that he rented and left completely trashed and in need of $30,000 in repairs. The paparazzi caught the entire incident, during which the process server said, “Hey, Johnny, you’ve been served, man.” Seemingly not bothered, Manziel replied, “Thank you, bro, I appreciate it,” and picked the envelope off the ground.

In a similarly public situation, congressional candidate Senator Isadore Hall was served during his own election party in San Pedro, though he still tried to avoid the process server. Though Hall’s papers aren’t demanding $30,000 in damages like Manziel’s, Hall is being subpoenaed for a deposition to determine his involvement in a bad real estate deal.

Even if people are rich and famous, the law can still catch up to them.
